Curation

The concept of protecting your image has been around for a while. No one has used it quite as well as the media and major events. The Met Gala is no exception to the rule. Some might say, it fueled it even. Protect the show is the mantra. Show a curated image that nothing can ever go wrong. Be aspirational, they say!

Curation in itself is not wrong. However, when it becomes the center of an event, what's even real? From the venue to the guest list, everything has been shaped to fit Anna Wintour's vision. It starts with the place, then proceed to the carpet. Yes, the carpet has to tell the theme. Then, we move to the exceptionally curated guest list. All public figures, very well known, mostly beloved by the public. And an honorable mention to the designers whose names appear way too often.

Protecting the image is mainly what the event is about. What happens inside, no one really knows except the participants. From the outside, a perfectly curated event, almost like a choreographed dance, is all we see. They say result, I say curation. Is there a possibility that all might not be what it looks like?

Risk

Everything in life comes with a risk. Some risks are anticipated, while others are fully unpredictable. There's no real way of ensuring everything fully goes according to plans. Except, if you're the Met Gala! Risk does not exist. Risk is not taken. Risk doesn't look anticipated or worried about. We see what should be seen.

There might be a fear of misstep, who knows? But the public is not supposed to see weakness, is that right? The only event where even risk fully seems staged. Misstep is often celebrated, appreciated. It teaches a lesson and helps prepare better for next time. But here, it disappears into the void.

One can't help but wonder why? Wouldn't risk make the event feel alive, human? Fashion wise, we could argue risk and misstep might appear. Everything else is stale. Is it due to the high profile of the event?

Unpredictability

Looking at the Met Gala, what it is, what it stands for, what it used to be; so many questions are being raised. The event lost sight of fun and became sterile. It's perfectly curated, too curated. Nothing is left to hazard. For these reasons, the Met Gala lost sight of unpredictability and became exactly what it feared: predictable.

We know exactly how it will happen. The theme will leak and get people somehow excited. The guest list is then published. The event happens where we see a parade. Gorgeous outfits most of the time. Some fashion faux pas. The issue is, even the guest appearance is getting predictable with some appearing very early and some appearing very late and that becomes their signature.

The Met Gala, an event that has attracted admiration over the years for its risk taking, is now slowly becoming predictable. Too safe. Does an event have to choose between curation and risk? Can an event find balance between protecting its image and the fear of misstep? More importantly, an event that has long been admired for stepping out the box, can it lose its unpredictability?

Conclusion

Curation and risk often put people in a position where the choice is either one or the other, but never both. The question is: can they coexist in perfect harmony?
