Cult

Everywhere, there's a new marketing group helping and guiding us on the principles to build a cult brand or a cult following. What this usually means is having a strong base of people sharing the same values. In the world of fashion, beauty and lifestyle, it often means to share the same ideologies and philosophies when it comes to aesthetics.

While a cult may have a different meaning depending on context, when we talk about a cult in fashion or beauty, w all assume that it can only be positive and impactful. What could go wrong, right? Thinking about it, it's just a matter of having people who we can relate to from an aesthetics perspective.

It's important to acknowledge the idea behind the concept. How many times have we asked to be understood by others without having to over explain? Well, this is the visual recognition we have wanted. Being able to see similarities with others in the way we do simple acts such as dressing up and doing our makeup.

Sameness

Sameness, on the other hand, is quite different. It's not having similar perspectives or ideologies. On the contrary, it's about looking all the same. Another term used for it in the industry is Uniform Dressing - wearing basic recognizable pieces everyday that are easy to be copied.

Sameness can also be seen in this industry as losing individuality. Better yet, losing personality. How many times have we been told in the past few years "Cool Girls wear this, It Girls wear that. To be It Girls, you should get this". So everyone rushed to get the same pieces.

Sameness is all about following trends that are aesthetically pleasing. It does not necessitate true beliefs, it only focuses on what can be tagged online. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, it's crossing a dangerous line called: Why does everything in fashion and beauty suddenly feel visually predictable? Is aesthetic boredom a symptom of deeper creative fear?

The Cult of Sameness

It is worth mentioning that while cult and sameness might be similar on the surface, they tend to have overall slightly different meanings in the way they apply. The confusion between the two has impacted Fashion, Beauty, Lifestyle, Wellness, and more. The Aesthetics Industry as whole has seen a regression in creativity.

Brands have turned their focus on what can go viral or what the algorithm pushes instead of creative risks. The Nation of Sensaciato refuses to sit and let boredom takes over. An absence of opinion in this case would be the equivalent of promoting beige epidemic and we refuse to stand behind lack of creativity.

It might be worth emphasizing that some brands, people, influencers, are against all odds taking more risk to bring creativity back on the stage. They understand that craftsmanship must be the standard and are willing to go against major trend-players to which we say Bravo!

Risk taking is creativity and following trends is celebrating boredom. One shifts culture, the other sits comfortable in it until there's nothing left. The Cult of Sameness is not a celebration, it's an affront to creativity.

Conclusion

Cult and Sameness are misinterpreted and it's time to bring them back to their origin. At what point does consistency become creative negligence? Can an industry be held responsible for collective aesthetic fatigue? Is sameness a coincidence - or a coordinated evolution?

There is a risk of cultural stagnation. Therefore, we recommend:
